There are many opportunities to volunteer your services at Historic Smithfield. From being a costumed interpreter to helping to stuff envelopes to working in the museum store to gardening to constructing rail fences, the volunteers at Historic Smithfield make this site a pleasant experience for our visitors.  Our volunteers are of all ages and from all walks of life.

Historic Smithfield has opportunities for young people ages 7 to 15 to participate in our junior interpreters program called Smithfield Kids.  This program includes training in the interpretation of this site, participation in our regular tours and special events, and hosting their own educational programs for young people.

Volunteers who are members of the APVA are automatically members of the Smithfield Guild.  At the Smithfield Guild's monthly meetings, a speaker presents a topic relevant to our site.  At previous meetings, we've discussed such topics as art in the Colonial period and seen how the paintings in this house reflected those trends; the "theater" of historic house interpretation; and investigated what William Preston's 2000 acres encompassed in present-day Blacksburg.  The Guild also takes an annual trip to another historic site.  In previous years, the Guild has visited Fotheringay; the Stewart Home of the Preston's in Abingdon, VA; several sites in Roanoke; Old Salem, North Carolina; Thomas Jefferson's Poplar Forest; and, in 2004, Historic Latta Plantation, the Mint Museum, and the Charlotte Museum of History and Hezekiah Alexander House in Charlotte, NC.

You can volunteer at Historic Smithfield and gain a sense of satisfaction and pride in preserving an important historic site.  Please contact us if you'd like to volunteer at Historic Smithfield.
