Upstairs Passageway

We know that in other plantation houses, slave girls or elderly women working as baby-minders and child-minders slept on a pallet in large spaces like this upper landing on Smithfield's second floor. Located between two of Smithfield's largest bedrooms, the landing would have placed a slave in close proximity to the children for whom she was responsible.
