Using a Virginia map, locate where the Nat Turner revolt occurred.  How do you think this revolt affected slaves in Virginia?  What about the slave owners?  What about whites who did not own slaves?  What happened to Nat Turner?  What famous feature of Virginia physical geography was important in the history of Nat Turner?

Using a map of Virginia and West Virginia, find and label where the John Brown Raid occurred.  How did the raid affect slaves in the area?  in the rest of Virginia?  How did the raid affect slave owners?  What happened to John Brown?

Using a map of the United States, trace the route(s) of the “Underground Railroad”.  Discuss why this effort to help runaway slaves was set up and what dangers were faced by those operating the “Railroad”.  Can you see a relationship between the routes the escaping slaves followed and the physical features of the land?  What relationship might there be?
